Brain Gym on Newsnight

The campaign group Sense about Science have started to attack the spread of Brain Gym through the UKs primary schools.

Sense About Science has been receiving calls from parents and teachers who are concerned about the use of ‘Brain Gym’ – a programme of teacher-led physical exercises claimed to improve cognitive abilities – in primary schools.

These exercises are being taught with pseudoscientific explanations that undermine science teaching and mislead children about how their bodies work.

Whilst I’m favour of movement based programmes and want to see teachers being more aware of how movement and learning go hand-in-hand, some of the claims made by Brain Gym are bizarre. More importantly they are not back by proper peer-reviewed science.

The BBC’s Newsnight program did a segment on the Sense about Science’s campaign and Brain Gym. It wasn’t very flattering.

This report was imbalanced and biased showing teachers vs a skeptical neuroscientist who is uninformed on the subject and doesnt even know how to do a basic movment of BrainGym. The first balance necessary is that you have compare neuroscientists to neuroscientists. BrainGym has already proven itself hundreds and thousands of times in the lives of individuals. Brain Gym grew from research of optomotrists (COVD)on basic accesses to the brain. Also the work of a nobel peace prize winner? R Sperry Nobel Peace Prize 1981, on the left/right brain discoveries. Carla Hannaford is one of the leading neuroscientists who can inform you about the scientific documentation on BrainGym. But she is in no way alone, if you want to do your homework, before you speak and see hundreds of references to research on the subject, go here http://www.braingym.org/brochures/BG_Research.pdf
Good health comes from Healthy Living. It has certainly proven itself in my life, someone who had a “terminal” brain tumor, paralyzed, at 24 my life was over. That was half my life ago, I still use Braingym regularly. Braingym played a large role in my neurological education along with somatics. I had been told by doctors, that I would die since the age of 9. Health has been a lifetime job for me. If you see me today, you would never suspect that I ever had a problem. Be thankful that Braingym is available to you. Large companies like IBM,and many others pay to have braingym taught to their executives, it opens up the brain and gives them that extra competive edge. If you miss Braingym, it is totally your loss.

  3. ‘Sense about Science’ do do some interesting stuff, and I’d broadly agree with them on ‘Brain Gym’. However, you should be warned that they are a front group for the ‘Revolutionary Communist Party’, and the good stuff they do is largely window-dressing as an excuse to push ‘Global Warming Denialism’.

I won’t work with them. Some of what they say is interesting, but be aware that they have a definite agenda.

I know, I now sound like a daft consipiracy theorist who thinks the world is ruled by giant lizards…
